GEO for small business: get found by ChatGPT and AI Overviews

More and more customers ask an AI instead of scrolling Google's results. If your site isn't read or cited, you don't exist to them. Here's what it takes, concretely, for a small business.

Why everything changed

In 2026 about half of Google searches show an AI Overview at the top: an AI-generated answer, ahead of the traditional links. In parallel, millions of people skip Google entirely and ask ChatGPT or Perplexity directly. The result is that ranking first among classic links matters less than before: the real question has become is your site read and cited by the AI when someone asks a question you could answer?

The good news for a small business is that the game is more open than classic SEO. A local company with one well-made page that answers a concrete question immediately and clearly can be cited ahead of a larger competitor whose content is buried in generic paragraphs.

First: make sure AI can read you

Before optimizing content at all, AI crawlers need to reach your site and see something. Two common obstacles get in the way, and both are usually accidental. The first: a robots.txt that blocks the «live» crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ChatGPT-User), the very ones that read pages to answer users. The second: content that only appears after JavaScript runs. Many AI crawlers don't run JavaScript, so they see a blank page.

You can check both in a minute with our free AI readability tool: it tells you whether you're blocking the right crawlers, whether there's content readable without JavaScript, and whether you have structured data.

Second: write to be cited

Once the AI can read you, how you write decides whether it cites you. The practical rules that work today:

  • Answer first, then explain. Every section should open with the direct answer to the question, not reach it after three paragraphs. That's exactly what AI extracts.
  • Use FAQs. They mirror how people phrase questions and hand the AI ready-made question-answer pairs to cite.
  • Add structured data. Schemas like Organization or LocalBusiness (who you are), FAQPage (the questions) and Article (the content) tell machines what your page means.
  • Show real expertise. Concrete experience, verifiable data, honesty about limits: the authority signals AI (and Google) reward.

Where to start

In order: first confirm AI can read you (it's the prerequisite, and often the problem is right there), then work on content. Run the AI readability check on your site: it's free, takes a minute, and gives you the list of problems in order of importance. It's the first concrete step to not staying invisible as customers move to AI.

What if you are the one using AI

Being readable by AI is one side of it. The other is disclosing the AI you use yourself: from 2 August 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act requires you to flag chatbots that talk to people and to label generated content. See the transparency obligations and the current deadlines, which after the Digital Omnibus are no longer the ones most articles quote.

Frequently asked questions

What are Google AI Overviews?

They're the AI-generated answers Google shows at the top of results, above the traditional links. In 2026 they appear on around half of all searches. When they do, click-through to the top organic results drops sharply, but some traffic flows to the sources the AI cites: being among those sources is the new prize.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

It's optimizing content so it gets read and cited by generative engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews), not just ranked in classic links. In practice it combines traditional SEO with structured content that answers a question directly and in an extractable way.

Can AI actually read my site?

It depends on two things. First: your robots.txt must not block the crawlers that answer in real time (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ChatGPT-User). Second: your content must be present in the HTML even without running JavaScript, because many AI crawlers don't run it. You can check both for free with our AI readability tool.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

Not yet. It's an emerging standard for presenting content to AI, but the major providers don't officially support it, so its absence isn't a problem. What matters today is crawler permissions, content readable without JavaScript, and structured data.

How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?

Typically two to six months after publishing optimized content, depending on your site's authority and how competitive the query is. The good news: a well-structured page that answers the question immediately can be cited even from a modest ranking position.
